Google’s augmented reality glasses have now been officially outed under the name “Project Glass”.
My initial thoughts are basically the same as what they were when the initial reports started coming out. Given Google’s recent track record, I’m skeptical of their ability to execute here, but I find technology projects like this inspiring. Good for Google to trying something completely new and bold.
Is this something we want and/or need? That’s a dumb question, in my opinion. You do great things by anticipating future needs, not by living in the cage of current thinking.
Obviously, I’m generally negative on Google, but I love the entire concept of Google X — er, Google[x]. It reminds me of the Google we first grew to love.
I hope they can pull this off.

Riffing off the earlier “wearable” computing report, Seth Weintraub reports that Google is working on actual Google Goggles. Supposedly, it’s a project that Sergey Brin is working on inside “Google X” and will be Google-branded hardware — but not Android-based.
Interesting — though my first thought is this.

When I left my full time gig at TechCrunch last month, there were a few things on my plate that I was still looking into. One of those was “Google X”.
I first started hearing about Google X in March. I was told it was the codename of the group Sergey Brin took charge of after he handed off control of Google+ — then-called “Emerald Sea” — to Vic Gundotra and Bradley Horowitz. The way it was described to me at the time was “Google’s version of Brickhouse” — referring, of course, to the now defunct Yahoo Brickhouse.
I asked around, but couldn’t get much. Someone else told me it was the place that some of Google’s best talent was going rather than leaving the company to go start their own thing or go to Facebook like everyone else.
