Pay No Attention To The Metro Behind The Curtain

Mary Jo Foley with an update on Metro-gate:

A spokesperson is now saying the reason for this Metro de-emphasis is not related to any litigation. (I asked if it is related to any kind of copyright dispute that hasn’t yet gone to litigation and was told there would be no further comment.)

The spokesperson added:

“We have used Metro style as a code name during the product development cycle across many of our product lines. As we get closer to launch and transition from industry dialog to a broad consumer dialog we will use our commercial names.”

Oh! It was always the plan to move away from the name at the last second without another name ready to go. I see.

Riiiiiight….

Adds Foley:

(Hmm. I didn’t realize “Metro-Style was ever “just” a codename.)

Windows 8 Phone Style RT Pro Live 3 Mesh

Tom Warren:

Microsoft is killing off the use of its Metro design name to describe a tiled interface in Windows Phone and Windows 8. We brought you news of the change earlier today, but a tipster has provided an internal memo sent to Microsoft employees confirming the move. In it, Microsoft reveals that “discussions with an important European partner” led to the decision to “discontinue the use” of the Metro branding for Windows 8 and other Microsoft products — one that employees must adhere to immediately.

Naturally, Microsoft finally chooses a pretty good name from a branding perspective and everything goes to hell. So now it’s on to “Windows 8 style UI”, which I would have assumed would have been Microsoft’s first choice anyway.
